This article comes from our friends at the National Clonal Germplasm Repository who were enthusiastically working on research to clarify the identities of many different cultivars of peony. As we all know they were unceremoniously pulled out of Alaska last June by USDA Ag Research Service. They were developing protocols so growers could, once and for all, distinguish one cultivar from another using DNA rather than visible characteristics such as flower color that can vary from site to site.
